New Zealand is a popular travel destination and thousands of travellers come to New Zealand each year for a working holiday. This is very beneficial to the NZ labour market and helps many businesses with their staffing needs.

To be eligible for a Working Holiday Visa (WHV) you must be between 18-30 years old, or between 18-35 for some countries, you must show you have adequate funds to pay for a return ticket, and show that you are coming to NZ for tourism purposes mainly, with working being a secondary reason.

While on a WHV, travellers can't accept a permanent job. Some will secure a job before arriving in NZ, but if that’s not the case, it is relatively easy to find a temporary opportunity when in the country. Registering with an agency like Trinity is a great first step if you are unsure where to look for a job, as we have many positions that are suitable for WHV holders – like factory work, orchard work, general farm work, labouring and construction work - and we can also offer advice on applying for bank account and getting an IRD number, which you will need prior to start working.

We love helping people into work and being a part of their journey in New Zealand! We have asked some WHV holders what their top tips are on working in NZ and this is what they said:

Prior planning is the key. when you first arrive in NZ make sure you apply for an IRD number and bank account as this can take a wee while. This ensures you are all set and ready to go when you are granted a job offer!”

Make sure you research the area and the type of industry you want to work in. In summer there is generally more orchard and fruit processing jobs available and in winter months there will be lots of opportunities available in snow sports.”

If you are on a Working Holiday Visa or are planning on getting one, we recommend joining local job seekers Facebook groups, and getting in touch with our team at Trinity. For some countries, the WHV determines a maximum period that you can work for the same company. By signing up with us, we will be able to find different work opportunities that suits you, so you get to experience different industries and remain employed for the duration of your visa.

New Zealand is a wonderful place to visit and work, so make sure you enjoy your time here and experience all that the country has to offer!
